The NGV has a brilliant kids program, and this month is no exception. Pack up the kids for a few hours at Uneasy Seasons. There are two contrasting spaces – one for little kids and another for teens – inspired by Australian artist Fiona Hall and her passion for the natural world. Nestled underneath the two treehouses, kids can join in making with a focus on the environment.

Entry is free. No bookings required. Open until 8 Oct 17, daily 10am–5pm

It’s never too young to get started with art! That’s why Heide Museum of Modern Art has introduced a new art program especially for babies aged up to 18 months. For 30 minutes, one of Heide’s art educators will guide you and your baby through sensory play in the gallery. Older kids will love playing detective in the sculpture garden – ask reception for free activities. It might not be picnic weather just yet but all the more reason to indulge in a slice of cake (or two) at the cafe!

Adult $18, kids under 12 go free. Book online for 15 and 22 August, 10am. Visit the website

Get down to your local Melbourne library this Children’s Book Week for adventures galore! Will your kids solve mysteries with Puss in Book pet detective? Or hear stories shortlisted for the Book of the Year prize? There are sessions for 3-5 year olds and 6-10 year olds.

Prices vary. Storytime is free. CBCA Children’s Book Week runs from 19 to 26 August 2017. Ask your local library for details.

Wintery Wednesdays have never been so much fun thanks to Fairfield Library. Kids from 5 to 12 years can join in crafternoon sessions, where they’ll learn to make delicate origami flowers or turn a recycled book into a super-cute hedgehog.

Free. 9, 16 and 30 August, 4-5pm. Bookings essential. Visit the website.

Shopping with a side of creativity? Don’t mind if we do! Head along to Southland shopping centre every Wednesday for free fun for kids. August has two mini makers craft activities, including a special Dad’s Day on 30 August.

Free. Every Wednesday from 10am to 1pm, outside Toyworld on level 2. Visit the website for details.
